It was identified in 1958 when two outbreaks of a pox-like disease occurred in lab monkeys used for research, which is where the term comes from, according to Dr. Vikrant Shah, consultant physician, intensivist, and infectious disease expert at the Zen Multispecialty Hospital Chembur.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), while smallpox was eliminated in 1980, monkeypox is still prevalent in Central and West African nations.
Monkeypox Disease Outbreak in India
India has boosted its vigilance about the uncommon viral disease as the new Monkeypox sickness spreads worldwide, with the WHO confirming instances in eleven European nations.
According to government sources cited by PTI on Friday, Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya recently asked the National Centre for Disease Control and the ICMR to keep a careful eye on the issue.
According to reports, the Union health ministry has also instructed airport and port health staff to remain watchful.
“On Thursday, the Union Health Minister ordered the National Centre for Disease Control and the ICMR to keep a careful eye on the situation in India,” the person explained.
An official source stated, “They have been asked to segregate any sick passenger with a history of travel to Monkeypox-affected areas and send samples to the BSL4 laboratory of the National Institute of Virology in Pune for analysis.”
How does Monkey Pox Spread?
The virus that causes monkeypox is transmitted to people by direct contact with an infected person or animal or through contaminated objects, WHO believes that rodents such as rats, mice, and squirrels spread the disease.
The illness is transmitted by sores, bodily fluids, respiratory droplets, and contaminated bedding. It was stated that the virus is less infectious than smallpox and produces less severe sickness.
According to health experts, some of these illnesses may be transferred through sexual contact. The WHO stated that it was also studying several instances involving homosexual or bisexual individuals.
“The natural reservoir of monkeypox is unclear; however, African rodents and non-human primates (such as monkeys) can harbor the virus and transmit it to humans, producing the illness.”
Is Monkey Pox Dangerous?

How is Monkey Pox Transmitted?

Monkey Pox Signs And Symptoms
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the initial symptoms of monkeypox are fever, headache, muscular pains, and fatigue.
The incubation period (from infection to onset of symptoms) for monkeypox ranges from 5 to 21 days but is typically 7 to 14 days.
One to three days (sometimes longer) following the onset of fever, the patient develops a rash, which often begins on the face and spreads to the rest of the body.
Is Monkey Pox Curable?
CDC adds that there is currently no established, safe therapy for monkeypox virus infection. Still, that smallpox vaccination, antivirals, and vaccinia immune globulin (VIG) can be utilized to manage an outbreak of monkeypox in the United States.
“There is no therapy, but an immunization against smallpox is beneficial in preventing monkeypox,” Dr. Shah explained. According to the World Health Organization’s website, smallpox immunization has historically protected monkeypox.
Although a vaccine (MVA-BN) and a particular therapy (tecovirimat) were licensed for monkeypox in 2019 and 2023, respectively, these measures are not yet widely available, and people under the age of 40 or 50 no longer receive protection from previous smallpox immunization programs.
